Ahh, the “X”. It will never be as clean and perfect as it was in the picture above. I took that picture in January 2013 the day I drove it home from Pinnacle Nissan.
I decided to buy this as a replacement for my 2007 Subaru Forester XT. I loved that car, but sadly the engine blew up with only 75K miles on it. Not exactly confidence inspiring, especially considering Subarus are supposed to be one of those “it will run forever” cars.
I had a plan in mind when I was shopping for a new vehicle. At the time, I had the Subaru, a Ford F-350 diesel, a Polaris Sportsman 800 ATV, and a pop-up camping trailer and a Hobie Pro-Angler 14 kayak. Storage was becoming an issue, and I wanted to consolidate a bit.
I decided to get a more serious offroadable vehicle (other contenders would have been something like a Jeep Grand Cherokee or Toyota FJ Cruiser). It would need to be able to top the kayak and pull the pop-up into the woods with ease.
The Xterra was a clear winner in all categories. It could pull 5,000 lbs and was a rugged offroading machine. So, I sold the F-350 and the ATV, and traded in the Subaru for the X.
It was a very good decision.
But, as with anything else, I couldn’t leave well enough alone…
